Alcohol abstinence and mortality in a general population sample of adults in Germany: A cohort study PLOS Medicine

Studies have shown that in some cultures there are a small percentage of people who can return to moderate drinking. Attempts at moderation may not be worth the effort or the risk when considering the consequences. If your own life has been a mess because of your addictive behavior, why chance it? What has the empirical evidence in your own life been?

  • John C. Umhau, MD, MPH, CPE is board-certified in addiction medicine and preventative medicine.
  • He also managed to get MM approved by the city of Los Angeles and the state of California as a program for first-offender drunk drivers 15 years ago.
  • And if you are doing that, you will always disconnect from what actually works for you.
  • At the end of four to six months of treatment with the Sinclair Method, 80% of people who had been overusing alcohol were either drinking moderately or abstaining entirely.
  • Just a clean and simple, “No thank you, I’m good,” moving on.

This radically different approach helps you succeed by dropping the perfectionism and judgment that blocks change. Decide what works best for you when it comes to drinking.

For cardiovascular and for cancer mortality, we used the death certificate information. Based on the information of the residents’ registration office about the date of death, we retrieved the death certificates from the local health authorities at the place of residence of the individual. The death certificates included health disorders that inferred death, which were a main causal or which were a contributing disorder in death. In total, a maximum of 15 disorders and 11 disorders as found by autopsy could be given by the physician who had to fill in the death certificate.

Sharing that diary with a trusted friend can be even more powerful. I spent the first semester of my sophomore year of college snorting speed. I also used marijuana to come down, drank excessively while high, and took a lot of ecstasy. By the time winter break rolled around, I was emaciated and had shingles. I went to my parents’ house and slept for two days straight.

Is moderation a realistic goal for some people with less severe drinking problems?

After a period of moderate drinking, some people end up achieving abstinence anyway. Sometimes not having to stop makes it easier to do it. If quitting is your ultimate goal, starting with moderation may help you achieve it. And even if you don’t plan to quit, you may find that you lose interest in alcohol after practicing moderation. Study authors used data from their prior randomized trial that tested two motivational interventions and one comparison condition where individuals were simply encouraged to reduce their drinking taking place over 7 weeks. Moderation Management is a secular non-profit organization providing peer-run support groups for anyone who would like to reduce their alcohol consumption.

alcohol abstinence vs moderation

Miller et al. found that more dependent drinkers were less likely to achieve CD outcomes but that desired treatment goal and whether one labeled oneself an alcoholic or not independently predicted outcome type. Edwards et al. reported that controlled drinking is more alcohol abstinence vs moderation unstable than abstinence for alcoholics over time, but recent studies have found that controlled drinking increases over longer follow-up periods. Finney and Moos reported a 17 percent “social or moderate drinking” rate at 6 years and a 24 percent rate at 10 years.

“Problem Drinking” is not the same as alcoholism

And I just want to say this; I think for a lot of people, that level of empowerment is scary. To say you’re in charge, you are your own best authority. Because people don’t teach us how to do this, how to be in charge of ourselves, how to be our own best authority. Now, I’m not saying that you can’t decide what’s right for you. But if you’re trying to do it based on a number, if you’re trying to do it based on a rule, you are disconnecting from yourself. We’re often making the decision to say yes as a way to tune out of our body.
